Yes, that's right... who wants egg rolls with their donuts & coffee? Obviously someone in Oroville, California as I swear we saw a sign for it (refer to 1st picture above). We're on the lookout for funny pictures along the way and I'll try to share them as we take them. Sometimes it's too late by the time we pass them, but it makes for a fun thing to do.
We've been traveling fools the last week. It feels like more time has passed as we've been and seen so many things. We're mainly taking advantage of all of the California ATV riding spots & campgrounds that we can ride directly from our spot. Very cool way to camp and VERY cheap - even free at some of them. Currently, we're in Mojave, CA and will be in Las Vegas by Friday. The last I wrote, we were on our way to Reno, NV, but we spoke to a fellow camper (from BC, Canada) and he said that the pass was rough and still snow-covered, so we headed to Southern CA. We were impressed by the number of ATV riding areas and amazed at the scenery. Both Matt and I have said that we picked the best time of the year to see the desert & high desert as everything is in bloom and the back roads are beautiful. (I-5 is totally lame - seriously - once you get out of the mountains, so we've taken some awesome backroads along the way!)
Since my last post...
- We've been to Oroville, CA and stayed on Lake Oroville. It is close to a place called the Clay Pit that is literally a big open pit that you can ride and ride and ride. Matt worked on his jumps and since I'm a whimp, I had fun getting muddy in the puddles.
- We then drove down to Carnegie State Vehicular Rec. Area outside of Tracy, California and it was crazy. There were hundreds of people there with ATV's and it was nuts. Being a Sunday night, most of them left, so we had the trails to ourselves. This place was much bigger than the Pit and we got used to riding a bit more. The trails were all coded by Easy to Hard (black diamond) and we were very impressed.
- ... THEN we got to Hollister, California and found our FAVORITE riding spot of all... Hollister Hills. Trees everywhere, wild pigs (yes! see the picture - we saw them right along side of the ATV trail, but didn't stop long to "play" with them... they were NOT happy to see us!), and trails that went on and on and on. It was like skiing in Utah where you think that you're almost to the bottom but it surprises you and you just keep on ridin'. Tree covered trails, along-ridge trails, around lake trails, it was AWESOME. We definitely have it in our minds to get back there someday for sure. It has approx. 6,500 acres of riding.
- You think that is big? Well, try 19,000 acres, which is what Hungry Valley Rec. Area had outside of Lebec, California. We stayed there last night and it was amazing how much riding there was to be done. It was up in the high desert, so got very windy, and the trails were fun, but we missed the trees. There were a few yucca trees, but mainly sage brush along the ground.
- Tonight we're in an RV park in Mojave. Nothing too special about this place (or the town for that matter), but we got to do our laundry for the 1st time this trip and internet access. Tomorrow we're off to the Mojave National Preserve and then to Las Vegas on Friday.
I've been taking pictures along the back roads - of cows, birds, flowers, etc. and don't want to bore you too much with them, so I'll just include the good/fun ones each time. We are sore from riding and will enjoy some "down time". Good thing is... we'll be in great shape in no time with the way we're riding every day. Yea!!!
Make sure to check bottom of the blog for our question of the week...and stay in touch!

Hey Holly & Matt,
Looks like you guys are off to a great start. WOW, who would have thought egg rolls & donuts went well together. I'll have to bring some into the office! Thanks for the suggestion. Well safe travels guys! Miss you, Cristina C
Mike - You're no fun.... can't play with the pigs?? What? :) Trying out the dutch oven tonight and can't wait!

I want to see some more high flying Evel Knievel moves on that sweet DRZ....!!!
I'll have the egg roll, hold the donut please!
the trails, the hills, the riding looks like fun. I would hurt myself there, only know one speed, wide open. No worries Holly, in no time you will be jumping that quad like a pro!
Keep having fun!

So far, I only jump the quad on accident. Have been up on 2 wheels (on accident) and that was enough... ha! We were just out in the Imperial Sand Dunes outside of Yuma, AZ and those guys that ride out there are NUTS! Seriously scary riding, but fun to watch.
